People Don't Change All at Once

One of the most important ideas in this module is that people may be at different points in the change process.

The CPE workbook introduces five stages in the simplified Stages of Change, or Transtheoretical, Model:

1. PRECONTEMPLATION

2. CONTEMPLATION

3. PREPARATION

4. ACTION

5. MAINTENANCE

These are the five stages identified in your CPE Student Workbook.

Workbook Connection

Use your CPE materials to complete your notes for each stage on page 30.

As you work through them, don't just memorize the names.

Think about this:

How might the way you talk with someone need to change depending on where that person is in the process?

Stop & Think

Consider a student who wants to improve their study habits.

Would you have the same conversation with someone who:

doesn't think their study habits are a problem

as you would with someone who:

has already created a study schedule and is trying to follow it?

Probably not.

Recognizing where someone is in the change process can help you think more intentionally about how you support them.
