The Dark Side of Deepfakes: How This Technology Can Cause Harm

Deepfake technology, which uses AI to seamlessly swap faces or speech in video or audio clips, provides endless positive possibilities for entertainment, creativity, and innovation. However, as technology advances, it also poses increasingly realistic threats regarding misinformation, reputation damage, exploitation, fraud, and the erosion of public trust. 

As deepfakes become more accessible and harder to detect, what is the full scope of the dark side of this technology? How might deepfakes negatively impact individuals, institutions, and society as a whole?

Damaging Reputations Through Hyper-Realistic Fake Content

One of the most immediately dangerous uses of continually improving deepfake technology is to produce fake yet realistic-looking content deliberately designed to damage reputations or depict situations that never occurred. Advanced deepfakes allow people to put words in someone else’s mouth very convincingly or depict them doing something questionable or inappropriate that they never actually did. The resulting videos can appear stunningly authentic and real.

Even today’s rough and obvious deepfakes can still go viral on social media and fuel misinformation campaigns. As technology keeps advancing, it may become impossible for almost anyone to distinguish complex deepfakes from genuine footage without specialized forensic analysis. This poses profound risks regarding the targeted harming of reputations worldwide.

If deepfakes falsely portray public figures like celebrities or politicians making inflammatory remarks or acting in bizarre or offensive ways, they could irreparably damage careers and reputations regardless of their authenticity. Even proven false, deeply realistic negative deepfakes could still catastrophically sway public opinion and enable widespread harassment both online and in person. In countries with high levels of socio-political tensions, damaging deepfakes carry added potential to ignite violence and unrest.

The threat posed to reputations and livelihoods applies on an individual everyday level too. Personal relationships and people’s professional lives could be easily sabotaged using intimate deepfakes portraying fictional yet believable situations designed specifically to hurt the target. Once released online whether publicly or privately, such malicious deepfakes often spread uncontrollably.

Enabling “Revenge Porn 2.0” and New Forms of Exploitation

In addition to damaging reputations, deepfake technology also chillingly enables disturbing new forms of exploitation, including AI porn generators to create porn videos that seamlessly graft victims’ faces/bodies into fictional abusive sex footage without their permission.

So-called “revenge porn,” typically involving the nonconsensual sharing of real intimate videos or photos by bitter or abusive ex-partners, is already a large and growing societal issue today thanks to internet connectivity and smartphone cameras. Deepfake technology dangerously accelerates this problem and makes it far easier to produce vivid exploitative video content depicting victims in intimate or humiliating fabricated situations without their consent, often motivated by revenge or cruelty.

While legal experts emphasize such AI-generated fake revenge porn lacks the authenticity of real recordings, the psychological impacts and ability for abusers to use deepfakes as tools of harassment and control remain just as devastating for victims. Regardless of actual authenticity, even fake nonconsensual porn still enables profound abuse and harassment when circulated privately or publicly.

Perhaps even more disturbing is the fact that deepfakes make the creation of realistic revenge porn scalable on disturbing levels. While typical revenge porn circulation previously relied on actual intimate photo/video files captured earlier, deepfakes horrifically remove this limit. A single authentic intimate photo now enables endless AI-generated video.

Eroding Trust in News Media and Shared Digital Content

As deepfake technology grows more advanced courtesy of AI innovations, even digital forensic experts may soon struggle to reliably detect manipulated videos and audio used to spread misinformation online and in mainstream broadcasting.

The resulting uncertainty surrounding basic media authenticity across both traditional journalism and online content sharing could severely erode public trust in the information itself. Modern life already deals with an overwhelming amount of media inputs, with convenience often prioritized over vetting accuracy. Deepfakes threaten to dramatically accelerate consumer inability to judge truth.

Today, even edited images and video clips often quickly spark claims of deliberate inauthenticity, “fakery,” and misinformation regarding factual world events among audiences primed to expect exaggeration or deception. As AI synthesis via deepfakes soon makes such editing and manipulation completely seamless, everyday people will likely soon dismiss even authentic real-life footage as merely the latest “too good to be true” hyperrealistic fake. For example, numerous AI nudifiers have been created to manipulate people’s images.

This incoming breakdown of fundamental public trust in recordings threatens to undermine journalism, governance, consumer products advertising, the legal system relying on photo/video evidence, and more across countless institutions and markets worldwide. While fraud certainly predates deepfakes, this technology poses concerns regarding misinformation at threatening new scales.

Facilitating Viral Hoaxes and False Propaganda Amplification

In addition to authentic media being dismissed as AI-generated fakes, conversely deepfakes also greatly empower purposeful hoaxes and propaganda spread by coverage-hungry media, malicious individuals, and state actors alike.

Deepfakes built on generative AI synthesis allow both governmental and non-state actors to create highly photorealistic and compelling video and audio content depicting world leaders saying inflammatory statements, famous celebrities acting illegally or inappropriately in public, CEOs admitting shocking scandals before Congress, and much more – all depicting prominent news events that in reality never even occurred.

Recent global news cycles already demonstrate even partially faked images/video and shockingly false written news stories can quickly go extremely viral on social platforms thanks to human tendencies towards outrage and belief confirmation bias. Deepfakes that portray realistic media instead of just exaggerated reporting now take this manipulation potential to entirely new levels. Most audiences likely will soon lose the ability to reliably detect such AI-forged hoaxes before propagating them online.

Aiding in Political Sabotage and Ideological Targeting

Moving beyond simply spreading misinformation, deepfakes can also enable malicious actors to sabotage and target ideological opponents and public figures.

While fake videos alone may not fully undermine established celebrities, they can still damage credibility, during elections for instance. Deepfakes purporting to depict political candidates making offensive remarks or holding unpopular positions on controversies could potentially critically undermine entire electoral campaigns even without convincing all viewers of their authenticity. Strategically timed release on highly partisan platforms creates inherent virality.

Additionally, horrific deepfakes that depict violence against or involve individuals belonging to groups already facing extensive real-world hatred, discrimination, or unfair targeting could perversely but effectively amplify further harassment and threats. Even national politicians extremely unlikely to face harm may see themselves graphically depicted in deepfakes used primarily to further fuel societal divisions and hatred along racial, gender, or religious lines for instance. Such a form of psychological targeting weakens public discourse and carries indirect but very real human consequences.

Facilitating Shallowfakes, Cheapfakes, and Lower-Tech Lies

While advanced deepfakes represent the most hyper-realistic manipulation threat going forward, meanwhile far simpler forms of edited media misinformation and disinformation referred to as “shallowfakes” exploit much of the same AI training data and public uncertainty that powers deepfakes. Shallowfakes frequently manipulate context rather than directly altering footage itself. For example, it can undress images that violate the privacy policy of people.

Shallowfakes often splice together or take real videos widely out of context to attack ideological targets. Other times, they use selective editing with no actual video alterations to similar effect. This contrasts with full face/voice-swapped deepfakes that portray events that never took place.

Relatedly, shallowfakes also effectively incorporate broader categories like “cheapfakes” as well. Cheapfakes require almost no technological sophistication at all but provide much of the same emotional manipulation potential by using crude editing tricks like speed changes rather than AI-powered video/audio generation.

These cheapfakes and shallowfakes compound the deepfake threat. Critics emphasize how social media platforms in particular focused substantially on banning or labeling AI-generated deepfakes while enabling igual or greater degrees of shallowfake misinformation proliferation to largely continue unchecked due to lower public pressure.

Enabling Identity Fraud on an Unprecedented Scale

So far, we explored misinformation and defamation enabled by deepfakes. However, the second core area of threat expanded by this technology lies in enabling vastly more dangerous and harder to detect identity fraud by bad actors worldwide.

Mimicking targets’ voices and likenesses through communication mediums like video calls, phone calls, and emails aids potential scams and enables frightening new forms of persuasive impersonation targeting everyday people. This risk of personal identity theft and associated fraud emerges as a common crime globally.

Far more severely, such deepfake-assisted impersonation also threatens the highest levels of government, military, intelligence, infrastructure, and corporate institutions among others. Advanced deepfakes replicating current or former government officials, business leaders, or military commanders could then falsely authorize financial transactions, access sensitive data, or issue institutional commands at massive scales.

Entire companies, state governments, and military bodies grow profoundly vulnerable to malicious deception efforts enabled by such AI voice/face replication. While fraud predates deepfakes, this technology poses systematic risks to organizational trust and integrity at threatening new scales only beginning to emerge.

Oversaturation Risks Desensitization

A final concern is that public deepfake oversaturation may breed indifference regarding fake content itself. Early excitement and outrage around deepfakes could slowly normalize them in the public consciousness over time. Critics argue consistent exposure across entertainment and news media will gradually desensitize public reactions.

If society grows numb to deepfakes and no longer sees manipulated video itself as a serious issue, we risk failing to address the resulting problems. Extensive history shows media consumption fundamentally impacts public opinion and behavior over time. The long-term effects of deepfake oversaturation demand increased attention even now.

Countermeasures and Safeguard Solutions

While deepfakes create major complex challenges, researchers emphasize solutions exist. Technical countermeasures include improved deepfake detection methods using factors like heartbeat measurements. Preventative legislation also shows promise in jurisdictions like New York City and Virginia limiting impersonation and nonconsensual content.

Experts also advocate broader initiatives promoting public awareness, digital literacy, and increased social responsibility from tech platforms. Combined technological, policy, and societal responses offer paths to mitigate deepfakes’ dark side. Though the threats seem profound, proactive effort makes hope tangible.
