Glock 26 made a big splash when it debuted in 1994 as the company’s first subcompact double-stack 9mm. It replaced the small-frame snub-nose revolvers with superior features and performance. The G26 is compact and lightweight, making it easy to conceal. It also offers a high-capacity magazine that gives it an advantage over other subcompact guns, like the Smith & Wesson Shield.
Concealed Carry
Glock 26 is the smallest double stack available from Glock. It has a very compact frame and slide that makes it a great option for concealed carry. It is a good fit for inside-the-waistband carry and can also be used at the range or as a nightstand pistol. The Gen 5 model comes optics ready and has a redesigned trigger with a consistent feel. Streamlight offers a grip mounted laser and Crimson Trace has a Guide Rod Laser for the Glock 26.
The Gen 5 trigger takes some getting use to with the consistent tension through the whole cycle of a shot. It still has a shorter travel than a full-size service pistol but it is very smooth and quick to break at the point of impact. It uses Glock 19 magazines and can also be fitted with an extended beavertail backstrap for meaty hands (Gen 4 and 5th gen only). The lack of Picatinny rail slots on the frame limits options for accessories such as lights and lasers but the aftermarket has many alternatives.
Accuracy
Glocks are known for their impressive accuracy, and the 26 is no exception. Its stubby grip is small enough to fit in the palm of most shooters' hands, and its double-stack magazine crams 10 rounds into it. The Gen 5 models boast a new trigger system with more consistent tension throughout the pull and a wall in which the trigger breaks, resulting in improved accuracy. This may be why the G26's trigger feels a bit different than other Gen 5 models, but it doesn't detract from its overall quality.
For those who prefer an optic-ready pistol, the G26's lack of a rail is a disappointment. There are other options out there, including grip mounted lasers from Crimson Trace and LaserMax and a weapon light from Streamlight. There are also other Glock subcompacts, including the G43X and G48, that are optics-ready.
Reliability
Glock pistols are renowned for their durability and reliability, trusted by law enforcement agencies and civilian shooters alike. The 26’s simplicity of design means fewer parts to go wrong, making it more reliable than many other handguns on the market.
The Glock 26’s internal safety features 3 redundancies, which guarantees that the gun will only fire when the trigger is pulled. This feature has been proven to save lives of law enforcement officers and civilians who have had their guns seized by bad guys.
The 26 also allows the user to add a front picatinny rail for lights and lasers, similar to full-size Glock 19 models that have MOS capability. Likewise, the trigger and grip have been improved with the Gen 5 model to make it more red-dot ready. Other changes include ambi slide lock control, enhanced mag well serrations, and a new front grip serration design. These enhancements are all part of the Gen 5 line’s commitment to continuous refinement.
Maintenance
Glock 26 is a capable and reliable subcompact that has become popular among law enforcement agencies. It works well with most 9mm ammunition types but is particularly suited to premium hollow point rounds for self-defense.
The Generation 4 version of the Glock 26 offers a small, lightweight package with a high capacity magazine. It also includes the same family enhancements that make the larger Glock 19 and Glock 17 favored by many law enforcement agencies.
Wrapping It Up
Like any pistol, the Glock 26 needs to be properly maintained in order to perform reliably. It's important to use good quality ammo, replace magazines that show signs of wear, and regularly check and lubricate the gun. This helps to prevent a forehead-slapping moment when your Glock acts like it's on a hunger strike and refuses to feed the rounds that are lined up and ready to go. Lubricating the ejector with shooter's grease or automotive moly can help keep your gun functioning as it should.
